Over the past few months, The ESOP Association has been conducting an expansive market research study looking into attitudes toward ESOPs and employee ownership. Our goal for this ambitious project is to help ESOPs and professional service providers gain an edge in both internal and external communications through data-driven messaging that resonates with target audiences. We are just now starting to receive and analyze the results from this first-of-its-kind study, and we will release the initial findings and key takeaways at next week’s National Conference in Washington, DC.

It has been decades since we have seen the borrowing climate for deals change so sharply as it has recently outside of a recession. Financing for M&A and private equity transactions deteriorated dramatically through 2022, with third-quarter M&A financing down 70% from the previous quarter and buyout financing during the period less than half that completed in the first quarter.

Now ends the 2022 ESOP plan year and so begins a new year. With this annual cycle comes a myriad of contrasting economic, market, and other considerations that will influence new and existing ESOP valuations.

After several weeks of negotiations and sometimes very public political maneuvering, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have chosen their respective leaders and committee structures for the 118th Congress. Now that the dust has cleared and the business of Congress has begun, it is critical from an advocacy perspective to understand how ESOPs and the employee ownership community will be affected.

Recently, more than 60 volunteer leaders from TEA’s State and Regional Chapter Council (SRCC) journeyed to our nation’s capital for two days of strategic planning meetings at TEA headquarters in preparation for a busy 2023.

For the first time since the 1990’s, The ESOP Association Board of Directors has voted to add new Chapters, including an all-new Rocky Mountain Chapter and a re-instated Florida Chapter.

Today, during a Small Business Administration Budget Hearing, Rep. Dean Phillips (MN-3) engaged Administrator Isabel Guzman of the Small Business Administration on the issue of employee ownership. Rep. Phillips is a member of the House Small Business Committee who is a former businessman with a family history of employee ownership.

Senator Bernie Sanders, Independent Senator from Vermont and ESOP supporter will be addressing the National Conference on May 5, 2022.
Senator Sanders, the longest standing Independent member of Congress, has represented Vermont in the US Senate since 2007. In his 3rd term in the Senate, he is currently the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, and a high-ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, among other Senate committee assignments.
