In 2025 Web Industries is celebrating 40 years of employee ownership, 25 of them as a 100% ESOP. Web is a manufacturer with facilities and employee owners in both the US and the EU.  We are very intentional about implementing systems and structures for high participation. One very practical way we bring ownership culture to life is through our Ideas Teams. Inspired by the book Ideas Are Free by Alan Robinson and Dean Schroeder, this program harnesses the creativity of every employee owner to drive continuous improvement - one idea at a time.

“If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu…”This is an old adage in Washington, DC, that’s been credited to several sources over the past few decades.  Various newspapers, politicians, union leaders, and books have all referenced this saying in whole or part, and it was even utilized (though misspoken for comedic effect) by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the series “Veep.”

On March 11, Lori Chavez-DeRemer was officially sworn in as Secretary of Labor. The ESOP Association strongly supported Secretary Chavez-DeRemer’s confirmation because she has a deep understanding of ESOP businesses and the transformative power of employee ownership. She knows it’s possible to be both pro-business and pro-worker, and that ESOPs embody the best of both those worlds.

Chavez-DeRemer had been a strong and vocal supporter of ESOPs while serving in Congress. A unique thing about ESOP companies is that the trustee is the shareholder of record for the corporation, not the ESOP participants, who are beneficial owners. The trustee is a critical player, but the concept of a trustee can be confusing and unfamiliar to employee-owners. At most ESOP companies, a small group of employees, such as the CEO and CFO, regularly interact with the trustee through their functional roles, but otherwise employees don’t naturally interact with or get to know the trustee in the normal course of business.
