On a very strong 24-2 bipartisan vote, the Senate Appropriations Committee has passed the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill for the 2024 Fiscal Year that begins October 1. As one of 12 annual spending bills Congress must pass before the end of September, this is the initial step in funding the U.S. Department of Labor for the next year.

Economist Jared Bernstein has been selected to serve on by President-Elect Joseph Biden’s Council of Economic Advisors. Bernstein previously served as the chief economist to Biden during his tenure as Vice President in the Obama Administration. For ESOP companies, the move is particularly good news because Bernstein is very familiar with ESOPs and the benefits they provide.

October 27, 2020, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) and Ranking Member Kevin Brady (R-TX), both ESOP Champions, introduced the Securing a Strong Retirement Act of 2020. This bipartisan legislation seeks to help Americans successfully save for a secure retirement.
