An Initial Look at President Biden’s Proposals
Wednesday, President Biden introduced the nation to his American Jobs Plan and Made in America Tax Plan -- plans that seek to alter the federal tax structure, boost America’s infrastructure, and address issues related to families. We have conducted an initial review of these proposals, specifically the tax changes, to consider their effects on the ESOP community. Below are some observations on how these proposed changes, as currently presented, may affect ESOPs.

Marty Walsh, the two-term mayor of Boston, was confirmed as the Labor secretary by the Senate in a 68-29 vote on Monday, March 22, 2021.

Economist Jared Bernstein has been selected to serve on by President-Elect Joseph Biden’s Council of Economic Advisors. Bernstein previously served as the chief economist to Biden during his tenure as Vice President in the Obama Administration. For ESOP companies, the move is particularly good news because Bernstein is very familiar with ESOPs and the benefits they provide.

October 27, 2020, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) and Ranking Member Kevin Brady (R-TX), both ESOP Champions, introduced the Securing a Strong Retirement Act of 2020. This bipartisan legislation seeks to help Americans successfully save for a secure retirement.
